Wing Chun Kuen means literally "Eternal Springtime Fist" and is named, according to legend, after the first person to have learned the art. It was created in Southern China around the 17th Centaury by a Buddhist nun who witnessed a fight between a crane and a snake. Inspired by the movements and tactics adopted by the two animals, Wing Chun Kung Fu was created.
The aim of the art is to use core principles and rapid, direct and efficient attacks to enable a smaller, weaker person to overcome a larger, more powerful attacker.
The art is characterised by its use of multiple short-range hand and elbow strikes, low kicks and an emphasis on "sticking" to an opponent to spoil their attacks, rather than grappling or blocking strikes. A well-trained Wing Chun student will appear to move very quickly and aggressively through the use of very efficient movements and fast hand speed.
The practical, principle-based nature of Wing Chun makes it a relatively easy art to learn and can be adopted by people all ages and abilities. We have taught students from many different backgrounds, some who have faced tremendous physical challenges and all have been able to learn some extremely practical self-defence skills from this wonderful art.
For these reasons, it is a very effective system for self-defence in the modern world.
We teach in either small, friendly group classes or private lessons. This is the traditional way Wing Chun was taught in Foshan and Hong Kong and helps the student to develop a deeper understanding of the art.
Our weekly classes are on a Saturday morning and private lessons are made by appointment.
Please note that our classes and private lessons are for adults (+18years) only.
In addition to teaching Wing Chun Kung Fu we also offer private lessons in Qigong (also spelled "Chi Kung"). This ancient art for improving health and wellbeing has been practised in China for thousands of years and can be literally life-changing in its positive effects.
It is comprised of different types of gentle exercises combined with breathing in order to cultivate one's "Chi" or life-force. Students of martial arts find that it can help balance the rigours of hard physical training and many people train it purely for the many health benefits it brings.
Qigong has been found to greatly improve mental health, improve focus and clarity, reduce stress, increase healing, reduce the effects of chronic disease, improve nerve function and many other benefits.

Most people take up martial arts to learn self-defence skills. Whilst the physical skills Wing Chun training provides are ideal for use in a self-defence situation, the calm and focused mindset developed is of great value to the practitioner also.
In addition to more traditional Wing Chun training, we also focus on building skills in awareness, avoidance, de-escalation, conflict resolution, escape and dealing with adrenaline. Very importantly, we teach the correct use of force and how it relates to UK Law.
More advanced training includes weapon defence, multiple attackers and much more.
Dedicated self-defence training is also available through our organisation, and we can offer private training, small groups, regular classes and corporate training courses. Please contact us for more information.
